Jason derulo opens up on split with Jordin Sparks

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest today, Jason Derulo said he and longtime girlfriend Jordin Sparks broke up because he felt so much pressure to settle down...
"What happened...in a nutshell, there was a lot of tension in the relationship for a lot of different reasons... There was a lot of pressures of marriage. There was a lot of arguing and stuff like that that just weighed on our relationship over time. When you stop having more good times than bad bad times, it’s time to call it quits. It becomes something that is unhealthy. I'm not one to throw my business out on the street, but I thought it was important because things are getting a little out of hand.
To be fair, it was not just from her either. It was kind of from everybody. That’s not the sole reason, but it definitely played a part. I'll be lying if I said that we parted in good terms. But it's not a bad situation. There’s no bad blood. We didn’t end off on a weird way or a negative way.'  Jason said...

Has GOD Cursed Nigeria?-Etcetera.

I’ll like to state that I am writing as a Christian, and one who is tolerant of other beliefs. And I do not want this to be seen as a debate whether or not God exists. So, you religious hammer throwers should hold on. But feel free to read if you can shed your holier-than-thou skin momentarily, and see the premise of this write-up.

For so long, I have wondered whether or not God curses nations, long before I started wandering back and forth in my faith. What brought the thought back to my mind more forcibly this time is the recurring crisis this country has seen in recent times and the political rhetorics and lies used to choke back the cries of the people. We have constantly prayed for God’s deliverance upon this nation. Has he answered? Yes! and he will continue to answer. But he has also blessed us with a free will to decide our paths.

A majority of Nigerian Christians consider themselves “born again.” I know how these people think because I have been in that realm. They believe God is involved in all things Nigeria; from today’s suffering to tomorrow’s redemption. They believe that if God really wants a changed Nigeria, he will do it. Everything in Nigeria today is the lord’s doing. Isn’t it pretty easy and convenient not to do anything when you believe that God will sort everything out? Now the other side of the coin question is, “Do Nigerians love God? Nigerians don’t love God for a variety of reasons stemming from high level of corruption in the land, to political killings, Sodom and Gomorrah-like promiscuity, money worshipping; the list is endless. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah better exemplifies the correct state of the nation. In Sodom and Gomorrah’s case, Abraham was able to bargain with God to spare the city and God agreed to spare the city if only 10 righteous souls were found therein. In Nigeria, who is the Abraham that God will speak to? Is it the pastor who is more concerned about his jet that was involved in a $9.3m arms purchase scandal or the one whose church collapsed and killed scores of people due to negligence? God promised to spare Sodom and Gomorrah if the righteous in the city amounted to one per cent. If Nigeria’s hope of being spared as a country lies in God finding just one per cent of righteous men from about 200m Nigerians, we are finished. It is good enough that In God’s eyes, it doesn’t matter how many heathens or corrupt people inhabit Nigeria. As long as the real Christians and Muslims, even if they number as few as one per cent, change their ways and turn to the lord, we shall all be blessed.

Amidst everything, God has indeed blessed Nigeria. He has shielded us from all the natural disasters experienced in other parts of the world. Even after the civil war, we were able to pick ourselves up and avoid disintegration. But today, we have chosen carnage and terrorism over peace. We have chosen corruption and hatred amongst ourselves over the unity God has given us. According to 2 Chronicles 7:14, God won’t bless a nation unless the nation stands under him. We all know that isn’t the case anymore in Nigeria. It went out the window a very long time ago. Nigeria pays lip service to a belief in God. No matter what the pastors profess, it is all crap because we have broken all of God’s laws, and there is a price to be paid for doing so. We have started paying the price and we haven’t seen nothing yet. Christians and Muslims demonise one another. They want you to do things their way or die (not God’s way). Politicians and their minions are scheming and influencing policies that will bring about the end of this country. From what we have seen of some pastors in recent weeks, do you need further proof to believe most of them are more anti-Christ than Christ-like? This isn’t a Christian nation any longer, or any other type of nation for that matter, God isn’t going to save us. And he’s not going to save all the false prophets and religious phonies out there. Religion has turned into a parlor trick, a side show, and has endorsed all the sins practised today. Go to mosque on Friday or church on Sunday, be forgiven, so you can sin all week. A bunch of hypocrites.

One known truism is “God hates competition,” and we have put ourselves at odds with his command to put him first. Money and materialism have never been more celebrated in Nigeria. We defraud and kill ourselves to be named on Forbe’s list of world’s richest individuals. We invite conjurers and ritualists from all over the world to spill human blood unto this land, a land we expect God to bless? Now put on your thinking caps and recall your Old Testament knowledge. Recall stories such as when the Jews left Egypt and very shortly thereafter worshipped a Golden Calf. Did that please God’s multi-cultural heart, or did he strike dead 3,000 Jews on the spot? Even Jesus was less tolerant, casting forth curses and promises of hell fire to anyone who didn’t believe his story. So, let no Nigerian claim this is a God fearing nation until we are wrinkled in our faces with shame and repentance. And as it stands right now, if you want God to save you, you may have to take it up with him after you die because I don’t see God anywhere in Nigeria today (apologies to no one). Just one look at the nation in the Bible known as “God’s people” and the requirements thereof, you will see that Nigeria is no more than Sodom and Gomorrah.

Some of you holier-than-thou Christians might say; “Well, so what! Whether or not God blesses Nigeria is irrelevant. God can and will continue to bless me individually, no matter where I live. I won’t argue with you. I only hope for your sake that you realise Nigeria doesn’t revolve around you. We are mentally enslaved to our selfishness and that of our religious leaders who have realised how easy it is to control others with the fear of what comes in the afterlife. It is not too late to retrace our steps and begin to make better choices for our nation and the world in general. Because as it stands now, Nigeria is on its own. You are on your own. God isn’t going to come down and save this nation from self destruction. You can as well start now and ask God to send your soul to heaven.

South Africans to sue T.B Joshua

Following the tragedy that happened at the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, two South Africans, Thanduxolo Doro and Mpho Molebatsi, who lost relatives in the incidence have revealed plans to sue Prophet TB Joshua.

BBC reports that the two men, who both lost sisters in the collapse, are calling on more families to come together in bringing a case against

It would be recalled that about 115 people, including 84 South Africans, reportedly lost their lives in the multi-storey building collapse of September 12, 2014, at Ikotun area of Lagos State.

The collapse, according to authorities, was caused by improper architectural work as the floors were more than the weight the foundation of the building could hold.

It was revealed that Doro and Molebatsi waited at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo airport for days after receiving news of the tragedy waiting for their sisters who have been visiting SCOAN to return. Both families were said to have heard from their relatives hours before the collapse.

Doro, whose sister Vathiswa Madikiza died in the accident explained that the suit is not about the building collapsed, but what was done after the collapse. He condemned the fact that they did not receive any news from the

“When I contacted them they wouldn’t tell me anything. We saw reports that emergency workers were denied access initially, access that could have saved lives. The actions of the church after the incident are very telling,” Doro said.

Similarly, Molebatsi, whose sister Hlubi Molebatsi, was also killed revealed that, he had contacted his lawyers. He said he has spoken to other families but it has been difficult because it is a time of mourning. He insisted that he wants to see families get something from the church because some of the people that died were breadwinners.

Meanwhile, about 25 survivors of the building collapse have continued to receive medical attention following their return to South Africa. Authorities confirmed that 16 of the wounded are in critical condition, with some having had limbs amputated and other complications.

It would be recalled that on September 22, 2014, a also revealed plans to sue the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, Prophet T. B. Joshua, over the deaths of some of its nationals at the church building collapse.

The motion for her to be immortalized was moved by Hon Adefunmilayo Tejuoso and seconded by Hon Muyiwa Jimoh. The lawmakers said Dr. Adadevoh's act of stopping Sawyer from leaving the First Consultant hospital after she found out he was infected with the deadly virus, saved many lives

FBI officials say Jihadi John has been identified.

The FBI has identified the ISIS executioner who appears in the beheading videos of US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and British aid worker John Haines.

Agency director James Comey told reporters today that he knew who the militant was but would not be releasing his identity or nationality to the media.

The executioner, who has a British accent and has been dubbed Jihadi John, is one of four British jihadis known as the 'Beatles' holding hostages in Syria.

He appears in the group’s execution videos wielding a knife – and taunts President Obama before carrying out the killings

Today British officials would not say if the identity had been shared with the authorities on London, and would not be drawn on whether any arrests are imminent.

A Home Office spokeswoman said: 'We won't be commenting on matters of security at this stage.'

Comey said the FBI believes that ISIS is 'looking to try to do something in the U.S.,' but added he did not believe the group is capable of a sophisticated or complex attack.

During questioning from reporters at the FBI headquarters Comey also spoke about Khorasan group, an al Qaeda affiliate who were targeted along with ISIS by American airstrikes in Syria earlier this week.

He said he was 'not confident at all' the threat from Khorasan militant group was thwarted by the airstrikes.

'We don't have complete visibility about their activities.

'We believe they've been working toward an attack, but it's hard to say whether it would come tomorrow, in three weeks, or in three months,' he said.

Comey added the FBI is still working hard to identify two people in ISIS videos who appear to have American or Canadian accents.

'We have a big focus going on that right now,' Comey said.

He said about a dozen Americans are believed to be fighting with extremist groups in Syria at the moment.

He says more than 100 Americans have either tried to go to Syria and been arrested, gone successfully, or gone and come back.

The figure of 100 has often been misinterpreted to represent the number of U.S. citizens fighting in Syria.

Comey says all the Americans who have returned after fighting with extremist groups are either under investigation, under surveillance or have been arrested.

The director says he's not confident the U.S. has identified every American who had joined up with militants in Syria.

Yesterday British Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond revealed intelligence agencies were closing the net on Jihadi John.

Hammond, who just ten days ago admitted special forces didn't know where the Islamic terror group was holding its British hostages, said the investigation into tracking down the killer with the British accent was 'narrowing down the field'.

Speaking to American television network CNN at the United Nations summit in New York, Mr Hammond said: 'We are getting warm, we are working on all the leads.

'There's a big investigation and we are getting warm. We're narrowing down the field, but I don't want to say any more at this stage.'

Earlier this week it was revealed that US spy planes are flying above Britain monitoring telephone and computer signals in a bid to track down Jihadi John and those who are communicating with him.

The aircraft, manned by British pilots and carrying FBI agents, are equipped with technology so advanced they can detect heat coming off a keyboard when a button is pressed.

A source revealed Jihadi John, comes from a South London suburb about 10 miles from Central London.

The signals and data collected by the spy planes is being sent back to the US to be analysed, the Sunday Express reported.

An FBI source told the paper: 'Electronic footprints might help us pinpoint the location of the British IS executioner because we believe there are associates of his in the UK who are directly communicating with him.'

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa divorce drama...and well how Nick Cannon is involved.

Rumours of a possible affair between Amber Rose and Nick Cannon surfaced after Amber filed for divorce from husband of 14 months Wiz Khalifa and Nick's camp were quick to deny  that he is sleeping or dating Amber Rose ,meanwhile  sources close to Nick told TMZ that Nick knew nothing of Amber and Wiz's marital problems until after her lawyers notified him during negotiations of her new management. However sources admit Amber and Nick bonded over break-up stories but insist their relationship is strictly professional.

Amber Rose has filed for divorce from Wiz Khalifa because she's convinced he's been a serial cheater for months ... making lame excuses that just don't hold water.
It's a bitter break-up, with each accusing the other of cheating. Sources connected with Amber tell TMZ ... since the beginning of Wiz's tour in July she strongly suspected he was stepping out.
Amber's telling friends she wanted to join Wiz on the tour but he came up with a panoply of excuses, the most frequent of which ... she should stay home with their 1-year-old.
She also says he tried to show dominance by telling her he's the bread winner and he needed to be left alone to make money and she needed to stay home. BTW ... we understand that doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's what she said.

As we reported ... Wiz believes it was Amber who was cheating, because of Nick Cannon , and she's throwing up allegations against him as a cover for her own misdeeds.

And Wiz has complained privately ... Amber is one big nag.

APC tells Jonathan to hand over Sheriff and Ihejirika to International Criminal Court(ICC)

PDP’s main opposition party, All Progressives Congress, APC, has demanded the immediate trial, by the International Criminal Court, of two former Nigerian officials named by a government-appointed negotiator as the sponsors of Islamist group Boko Haram.
At a press conference Tuesday, the APC called on President Goodluck Jonathan to hand over former governor of Borno state, Ali Modu Sheriff, and former Chief of Army Staff, Azubuike Ihejirika, to the International Criminal Court, ICC, to face trial over their alleged sponsorship of the group.
The National Chairman of APC, John Oyegun, who spoke at the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja, said his party expects the president to “summon courage” and “do the right thing”.
“Now that the cat has been let out of the bag and the real sponsors of Boko Haram have been exposed, we hope President Jonathan will summon the courage to do the right thing: Hand over the identified Boko Haram sponsors to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation and prosecution,” Mr. Oyegun said.
“There is no doubt that Boko Haram has committed crimes against humanity in its scorched-earth campaign against unharmed citizens, and the most appropriate body to investigate and try the sect’s sponsors is the ICC.
“According to Article 17 of the Rome Statute that set up the ICC, and to which Nigeria is signatory, the ICC is a court of last resort, expected to exercise its jurisdiction only if states themselves are unwilling or unable genuinely to investigate and prosecute international crimes,” Mr. Oyegun said.
An Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis, appointed by the Nigerian government to help rescue more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, has accused the former army chief and former governor as the major sponsors of the deadly sect.
Messrs Sheriff and Ihejirika have denied the allegation.
Details later.

Ten ways to prevent food poisoning

If you've ever had food poisoning, you'll know how unpleasant it can be, even for a fit and healthy person. Sometimes food poisoning can cause serious illness and even death.
Most people assume that food poisoning comes from restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets, but according to the FSA you're just as likely to get ill from food prepared at home.
"People don't like to admit that the germs might have come from their own home," says Dr Andrew Wadge, chief scientist at the FSA. But it's a common myth to think that food poisoning only comes from a dodgy takeaway.
Follow these tips to reduce the risk of food poisoning at home.

Wash your hands

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water and dry them before handling food, after handling raw foods including meat, fish, eggs and vegetables, as well as after touching the bin, going to the toilet, blowing your nose, or touching animals, including pets.

Wash worktops

Wash worktops before and after preparing food, particularly after they've been touched by raw meat, including poultry, raw eggs, fish and vegetables. You don't need to use antibacterial sprays: hot soapy water is fine.

Wash dishcloths

Wash dishcloths and tea towels regularly and let them dry before you use them again. Dirty, damp cloths are the perfect place for bacteria to breed.

Use separate chopping boards

Use separate chopping boards for raw food and ready-to-eat food. Raw foods can contain harmful bacteria that spreads very easily to anything they touch, including other foods, worktops, chopping boards and knives.

Keep raw meat separate

It's especially important to keep raw meat away from ready-to-eat foods such as salad, fruit and bread. This is because these foods won't be cooked before you eat them, so any bacteria that gets on to the foods won't be killed.

Store meat on the bottom shelf

Always cover raw meat and store it on the bottom shelf of the fridge, where it can't touch other foods or drip onto them.

Cook food thoroughly

Cook food thoroughly and check that it's piping hot all the way through. Make sure poultry, pork, burgers, sausages and kebabs are cooked until steaming hot, with no pink meat inside.

Keep your fridge below 5°C

Keep your fridge temperature below 5°C. By keeping food cold, you stop food poisoning bugs growing.

Cool leftovers quickly

If you have cooked food that you're not going to eat straight away, cool it as quickly as possible (within 90 minutes) and store it in the fridge or freezer. Use any leftovers from the fridge within two days.

Respect 'use-by' dates

Don't eat food that's past its "use-by" date label. These are based on scientific tests that show how quickly harmful bugs can develop in the packaged food.

Re-Africa’s Development: Time to Abandon Theory and Confront Reality
Economics is a slippery subject indeed. Even the great Albert Einstein who is widely presumed as the most intelligent specie to have graced the earth, the same Einstein who is the originator of one quaint equation,, which had been driving the successive generation of physicists and mathematicians crazy ever since it was proposed in 1905, once had to give up Economics. According to him, he had difficulties in “reconciling the paradoxes which are so thickly embedded in economics.” They simply drove the Professor of professors up the walls. Because, in economics, often times, theory is not a true reflection of reality.
In two consecutive editions of the Business day Newspaper of Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th August, 2014, Dr. Olu Fasan, a London-based political economist took time to scholarly criticize Dr. Kinsley Moghalu, Nigeria’s Deputy Governor of Central Bank’s recently delivered lecture on Africa’s development. While Dr. Moghalu delivered his lecture entitled “Beyond Africa Rising” at the London School of Economics, Dr. Fasan took to the Guardian Newspaper for a rejoinder under the caption: “Africa’s development: Fallacy of self-sufficiency”.
While Dr. Moghalu was on a mission to challenge the current orthodoxy about Africa’s development, Dr Fasan brilliantly defended globalization, which according to him, is a reality which “Africa must embrace (irrespective of) the challenges and the opportunities it presents.” Considering the status of both dramatis personae, the positions taken by these two highly placed individuals are profound ideas that can have fundamental effects, and define or re-define the terrain of policy dialogue. While one is the deputy governor at CBN, the other is an erudite political economist and a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics. It is for these reasons that we need to critically examine the worldview that Dr. Fasan hypothesized to correct any inaccuracy, just as he had done to Dr. Moghalu’s dissertation.
The fulcrum of Dr. Fasan’s disagreement with Dr. Moghalu is that globalization is not as dangerous as portrayed by the latter. Globalization to him has huge opportunities because it has liberated economies and has also succeeded in launching Nigeria’s economy to become the Africa’s largest through its recent rebasing. To him therefore, “nothing will perpetuate the inequality and marginalization that Africa currently suffers…more than an inward-looking, self-reliant economic policy.” He also submitted that self-sufficiency failed many countries that had practiced it in the time past that they had to abandon it.
Dr. Fasan did not hide his support for the middle class who, according to him “is often the victims of a policy of self-sufficiency”. He rejected the policy of self-sufficiency because it will “force the middle class to exercise frugality or control their tastes and cupidity through restrictions on imports.” If we may ask, what are the percentages of Middle Class citizens out of the entire population of Africa? How many people can really afford the price of the luxury things that flow into the continent on a daily basis? Let’s just consider the primary items that appear to be the cheapest of these items. How many citizens can afford the usage of gas cooker, microwave and other electric cooking appliances in the sub-Saharan Africa where, according to the statistics released in 2013 by UN on Global Issue, over 80% of the population depends on traditional biomass such as fuel wood, charcoal, wood dust and animal dung to meet their energy needs for cooking? In another statistics released by the same UN, around 27-28 per cent of all children in the developing countries are estimated to be under weight or stunted. Again, sub-Saharan Africa region account for the bulk of the deficit. Africa’s economic malaise is highly obvious but unfortunately our economics scholars pretend not to see it. Except for few wealthy elite and the more prosperous peoples of South Africa and the Maghreb, Africans have very few consumers. The much-touted middle class are not just there in the first instance as even the best educated ones such as Dr. Fasan often chooses to leave the continent for the West or the Persian Gulf in search of a better life.
To Dr. Fasan, globalization has liberated Nigeria’s economy which its activities in the “telecommunication and entertainment” sectors have suddenly made it the largest economy in Africa. But has this so-called economic improvement reflected in the lives of a common man in the street of Lagos, Yola or Owerri? A similar IMF’s pronouncement in Ghana three years ago claimed to have increased its overall GDP by two-thirds and vaulted it into middle-income status. Between then and now, Ghana’s currency has lost more than 30% of its value against major trading currencies; cost of living and utility tariffs have risen to an embarrassing limit while inflation has hit a high of 14%. Today, hopes of oil riches have dried up as Ghana’s success story descends into disenchantment as its citizens struggle to afford daily bread. And, it is disheartening to note that Ghana is now on its knees begging IMF for the award of another loan of slavery. That is what happened when a country implemented a World Bank’s dictation, such as what Dr. Fasan is recommending, hook, line and sinker.
The antics of the agents of globalization such as World Bank, IMF and their funding countries, who have long cultivated the diplomatic habit of shunning out encouraging figures to deceive the African leaders is not a new phenomenon. They often mention the fictional productivity of Africa just when the issues touch the mainstream. The risk is that few citizens and some African scholars are bought into this false sense of hope; thereby assist these agents of domination in spreading the misleading impression that appropriate route is being taken.
Indeed, Dr. Fasan is right about the development of telecommunication across the African continent. But he forgets to, or deliberately decides not to, talk of many African countries where radios, televisions, and automobiles are rare luxuries till date. No one is canvassing for total break away from the global world as Dr. Fasan assumed. Even an unlettered man in the remote part of the continent knows that he needs his neighbour to survive the rigours of this age. What everyone is saying is that such relationship must be based on principles. After all, the ‘Asian Tiger’ countries did not withdraw from global economic institutions or flout their rules before they developed to the point where they are today.
No nation has ever developed on the basis of raw globalisation and complete privatisation, as being canvassed by Dr. Fasan, without putting in place the essential foundations such as domestic infrastructure. The theory of raw globalisation as the only prerequisite for immaculate development as posited by him, was founded on a considerable ignorance of the history of economic development among the developed countries, the United States inclusive. In the first 70 years of its own history, American government had played a relatively active role in building the turnpikes, canals, harbours, railroads, and schools which made its subsequent economic expansion possible. When what economists unhappily termed ‘social overhead capital’ such as the provision of transportation, electricity, good roads, and food is the great need, public investment becomes a necessity, since foreign investors or private capital will not go into these area of low return.
One of the most distinguished 20th Century American Historian, Professor Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. in his book, A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House, described the United States’ attitude of forcing down globalisation on the Cuba’s throat as “a trifle unseemly on the part of a nation who had financed so much of its own development by inward economic expansion, inflation, wildcat paper money and state bonds sold to foreign investors and subsequently repudiated. If the criteria of the IMF had governed the United States in the nineteenth century, our own economic development would have taken a good deal longer. In preaching fiscal orthodoxy to developing nations, America is somewhat in the position of the prostitute who, having retired on her earnings, believes that public virtues requires the closing down of the red-light district.”
Even China, which Dr. Fasan made a glowing reference of, solidified its domestic economy before opening up its market. Long before it emerged an economic power-house, China has always been careful to ensure that its domestic economic development was not compromised in any way. Unlike what he would want us to believe, internal events have always influenced China’s foreign policy. It was not a sheer oversight or economic difficulties that forced China not to play any role in the African affairs during the Cold War, particularly in the 1970s, but a calculated attempt to solidify its domestic economic base before joining the fray. Despite the fact that African votes in the United Nations General Assembly made a weighty contribution to the accession of the People’s Republic of China into the UN Security Council in October 1971, China preferred managing its domestic reform to returning the Africa’s gesture. Following the end of the Cultural Revolution after the death of Mao Zedong in September, 1975, the launch of the economic reform programme ensued at the 11th Party Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in December, 1978. Even with this entrenchment of reform, market opening and trade liberalisation, Chinese state-owned firms enjoyed, and still enjoy, access to capital from the so-called policy banks most notably China Export – Import Bank and China Development Bank.
In a nutshell, the point is that while China’s unleashing of economic market forces in the late 1970s resulted in the erosion of ideological leanings of the Chinese leadership and society as a whole, it had solidified its domestic economic structures before embarking on that adventure. It is this kind of economic policy that enabled Chinese firms and its citizens to look outward and establish an international footprint over the course of decades. Till date, the bulk of Chinese outward bound investment originates from State-owned enterprises. According to the statistics published by China’s Ministry of Commerce in March, 2014, 84% of China’s outward Foreign Direct Investment (including stocks and portfolio investments) has come from SOE’s.
While he agreed that Africa is yet to build such viable public sectors, he also frowned at this kind of state capitalism on the basis that it would deny Africa a “market economy status (MES) in the World Trade Organisation”. He blamed Dr. Moghalu for recommending inward-looking economic policy; rejected state capitalism and criticized crony capitalism. He is convinced that “if globalisation is evil, self-sufficiency is a greater evil; and if market-based capitalism is bad, state capitalism and crony capitalism are even worse. And, as the saying goes, of two evils choose the less”. The less, in Dr Fasan’s scholarly view, is what he termed “entrepreneurial capitalism” where government would have nothing to do with business but would rather leave everything in the hands of sized medium enterprises (SMEs).
I had to critically read through his treatise to see his examples of countries who have successfully practiced such but to my uttermost dismay, his only reference is a 2009 Eurostat figure, which submitted that “SME’s accounted for 53% of the UK’s goods exports.” And, because of this untested figure that has never been subjected to rigorous test to prove its effectiveness, Dr. Fasan is challenging the Africa to jettison the building of domestic structures but open its domestic economic to foreign economic invaders and global fiscal hit men through what he called ‘globalisation.’
Dr. Fasan concluded by reminding Africa of the reality of globalisation. To him, “we must embrace both the challenges and the opportunities it presents.” Globalization, as he brilliantly conceived, spells disaster for the third world, particularly the nations of Africa. For a continent that is far from being self-reliant, for a continent which has little or nothing to sell, there is no any justifiable reason why we must keep our borders open so that the industrialized world can inundate our markets with their goods – even those we can easily do without or produce by ourselves.
Africa is surely not going to develop by solely relying on the magnificence products of other nations. We shall become self-reliant only by making the sacrifices which these other nations made to produce those luxuries. I disagreed with the position of scholars like Dr. Fasan who professes, against all the available realities, that ‘globalisation without regulation’ is the only way that leads to the promise land; that Africa should only “create the enabling environment for businesses to produce”, then totally hands off its business to the western powers, and go to sleep because its economic renaissance will be sorted out by the countries of Europe, US, or China. This is a blatant fallacy as no state has ever worked out the rejuvenation of another.  On the contrary, whenever a people have fallen into sleep, they have woken up in chains.  The nations which colonised us before will colonise us again, if we give them a chance.  Globalization is yet another form of colonization - this time not by nations or governments, but by multinationals with the active support and encouragement of their governments. Globalization is not a social thing. It is an economic thing. It is not about humanism. It is about wealth and power. In the face of this monster, if we do not set to work immediately to repair years of damage to our country and economy, if we do not unite and make the sacrifices that need to be made, above all if we do not give up our greed and corruption, it will not be long before we are assimilated by the rest of the world.
It is ironical that the borders of those nations which advocate globalization are shut, not only to our own men and women, but also to our goods. If we are going to be able to eliminate corruption and violence, we must first solve the problem of unemployment. We cannot solve the problem of unemployment until we begin to strengthen our state-owned enterprises and create new jobs. What made Africa to lag behind is not because of the failure of state-owned enterprises but the awful corrupt practices. A public enterprise can be managed exactly like a private enterprise with the exception that while a private commercial enterprise aims at profit maximization, a public commercial enterprise aims at either full cost recovery or a satisfactory profit. Because, the public enterprise is not too heavily tilted towards profit making; it ends up providing more employment than its counterparts in the private sector and its environment is healthier and less competitive.
A typical example today is the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (MINT); with majority government ownership and the CBN Governor as Board chairman and managed under a first class private sector model and makes satisfactory returns to government. The Bank of Industry (BOI) owned fully by government is another successful public enterprise that is doing Nigeria proud.
It is not true that corruption, graft, nepotism and embezzlement only occur in public enterprises. The 2008-2009 experience with very big Nigerian banks and manufacturing companies in the private sector where corruption, poor corporate governance practices and mindless acquisition of personal wealth became the order of the day is an example of the abuses that private enterprises indulge in. The inventory manipulation reported in Lever Brothers Plc and a similar practice in Cadbury Nigeria Plc also some years back are examples of such bad practices in the private sector too.
But these evil tendencies on the part of public enterprises were the same the world over. However, whenever such poor practices were detected among managers of public enterprises in countries like China, India, Brazil, Malaysia or South Korea, they were punished either by death sentence, life imprisonment, amputation, or very long jail terms that were complemented by debilitating fines. David Yonggi Cho, founder of Yoido Full Gospel Church, pastor of the largest Pentecostal churches in South Korea, who was sentenced to three years in prison this year February for embezzling $12 million his church funds, is one of the examples in this regard.
Finally, in Africa, our inability to enforce rules against corruption and petty theft has been our major undoing and not vice versa. I agree with Dr. Fasan, Africa Must fully open up – but not until we have put all the necessary requirement of development into places.
